AUGUST 2009 Cont...
AMA International Women & Motorcycles Conference

The other HUGE event this August was the AMA International Women & Motorcycles Conference which was held in Keystone, Colorado this time around. The Women In The Wind Club, along with other Women's Riding Clubs, sponsored guided rides during the event.

One of Jasmine's duties was to be 'Trail Boss' for the WITW guided ride. I had several WITW 'wranglers' from across the country who also helped out. Thanks to Ginna, Ann and Lisa, Pauline, Angela, Jody and all the other volunteers (I'm sure I'm missing a couple or three names here... sorry girls, senior moment) for all your help with the rides to Central City, CO. We also had other volunteers besides the WITW members, thanks to Daryll from Boston and to Denny and the Motor Maids and WMF helpers, for working these same rides.

Speaking of Motor Maids, I became the newest member of Motor Maids just after the closing ceremonies at the AMA Women's Conference. Cindy Black was after me all week to join and actually I had been thinking about joining the Motor Maids ever since my ride to Montana and the PAS Rally in 2007. I met several nice Motor Maids during that trip, learned more about the organization and had been wanting to join the oldest women's riding club in America for some time. Besides, they have some members who have really been riding a LONG TIME>>>>>> and still are! Gotta Love That!

So now I belong to the Women In The Wind Club and the Motor Maids.

Jasmine was also called upon at the last moment, by Genevieve Scmitt, to fill in as a panel speaker on the Veteran Riders Seminar. Once each day we conducted an hour and a half seminar on various subjects we've learned about the hard way, sharing what we've learned from our years and many miles of riding motorcycles. I was very pleased and excited to get to participate at this level in the AMA Conference.

Another high point for Jasmine was getting to meet Ashley Fiolek, the 19 year old moto-cross wonder woman. Not only is she winning every race she enters... Ashley was born profoundly deaf.

Ashley told us being deaf was not an obstacle to her racing career. She said being a woman in a man's sport was more problem than being deaf. But Ashley is fighting back - she is the first female to be part of American Honda - Red Bull Factory Race Team and is now leading points race for 2009 series championship. Jasmine was very proud to get time to chat and visit with this outstanding young woman motocross racer, Ashley Fiolek. You can read more about our visit on the Deaf Information Page

Lastly, I was able to visit with many of my girlfriends from around the country as well as make a few new friends. I especially enjoyed spending time with the Las Vegas Girls. Four of the Sin Sity Sisters rode over for the conference. Jody, Floretta, Lynette and I from Colorado found lots of time to hang out with old friends. Plus I met some awesome new friends from Texas, on both the Dirty Dozen Ride and the AMA Women's event. I look forwards to seeing new friends, Tina, Beth, Jean & Kristin next time I head down Austin-way.
